What is a chargeback ratio?

Your chargeback ratio is the percentage of your transactions that result in a chargeback in a given period — usually calculated as chargebacks divided by total transactions, multiplied by 100. Payment processors and card networks watch this number closely because it signals fraud risk, customer dissatisfaction, or fulfillment problems on your store.

For Shopify merchants using Shopify Payments, this ratio is one of the most important metrics on your account. A rising ratio can trigger monitoring, payout holds, or even account termination — often before you realize you have a problem.

What's a safe chargeback ratio?

Most merchants aim to stay well under 1%. A ratio below roughly 0.65% is generally considered comfortable — you have room to absorb the occasional dispute without triggering network scrutiny. Between 0.65% and 0.9%, you are in a caution zone: Visa's monitoring programs typically kick in around 0.9%, which means your account may come under increased review even if you have not hit the hard limit yet.

At 1%, Shopify Payments can freeze your payouts or terminate your account entirely. That threshold is not a soft guideline — it is the line that determines whether you can keep processing payments on Shopify. The calculator above shows exactly where you stand relative to these benchmarks.

How to lower your chargeback ratio

Lowering your ratio works on two fronts: preventing chargebacks before they happen, and winning the disputes you cannot avoid. On prevention, flag high-risk orders before you fulfill them, block repeat fraudsters by email and IP, and make sure tracking and delivery confirmation are solid — many disputes are friendly fraud from customers who forget they ordered.

On the dispute side, every chargeback you lose counts against your ratio automatically. Responding with complete evidence — order details, IP address, tracking, billing match — before the deadline is the difference between winning and losing by default. ChargeGuard handles both sides: risk scoring and blacklist tools to stop fraud early, plus automatic evidence collection and AI-assisted response letters so you win more of the disputes that do come through.
